A survey released by IT management software vendor BMC Software explains that mainframe computers still play a significant role in large data centers and that businesses are using them to run new applications as well as legacy software. In fact, enterprises are increasing the amount of work done on mainframes because of the platform’s advantages in security, reliability and cost-effectiveness. The bottom line is, mainframes are here to stay for the foreseeable future, so it is essential to ensure you’re getting the most out of yours.

When looking ahead to mainframe use in 2018, the majority of survey respondents listed cost reduction as their top priority which makes perfect sense. Many of them have already seen a rise in their MIPS usage over the last few years and that trend is expected to continue into the new year. Unfortunately, additional mainframe capacity is needed to support the increasing workloads, which will drive up operating costs.

The other key issues of concern of those surveyed were data security and application availability. Data privacy and security should always be a top concern for any enterprise. Application availability can be impacted by outdated and inefficient hardware making the process of pulling data from a hard drive or network more difficult and time consuming than it needs to be.

The results of the survey align with what we expected, as the concerns expressed (cost reduction, security and availability) are the same that our clients so often come to us to help them solve. Luckily, we have a solution. Our Parallel Data Mover (PDM) is a unique parallel data streaming technology that tracks, accelerates, and automates data movement and data integration with applications across your enterprise, all while reducing MIPS consumption by 50-95% and improving efficiency.
